IV. Academic Contests

Roman Culture/History Exam

This 30 question, multiple choice examination is available to all Latin I and II students.  All questions are directly derived from past NJCL/ACL National Latin Exams (1980-2011).  Latin I and II students will take the same examination, with questions derived roughly equally from NLE’s designated Latin I and Latin II.  Latin III and above students will take an exam derived from past Latin III/IV NLEs.  The questions will cover the daily life, geography, and history content common to the respective NLE syllabi.  Latin I students will compete only against other Latin I students.  Latin II students only against other Latin II students, etc.  First, second, and third places (with ties) will be recognized with certificates.

Greco-Roman Mythology Exam

This 30 question, multiple choice examination is available to all Latin I and II students.  All questions are directly derived from past NJCL/ACL National Latin Exams (1980-2011).  Latin I and II students will take the same examination, with questions derived roughly equally from NLE’s designated Latin I and Latin II.  Latin III and above students will take an exam derived from past Latin III/IV NLEs.  The questions will cover the mythological content common to the respective NLE syllabi.  Latin I students will compete only against other Latin I students.  Latin II students only against other Latin II students, etc.  First, second, and third places (with ties) will be recognized with certificates.

Latin Language Exam

This 30 question, multiple choice examination is available to all Latin I and II students.  All questions are directly derived from past NJCL/ACL National Latin Exams (1980-2011).  Latin I and II students will take the same examination, with questions derived roughly equally from NLE’s designated Latin I and Latin II.  Latin III and above students will take an exam derived from past Latin III/IV NLEs.  The questions will cover the Latin language content (grammar, syntax, vocabulary, derivatives) common to the respective NLE syllabi (usually, the first twenty questions of each NLE).  Latin I students will compete only against other Latin I students.  Latin II students only against other Latin II students, etc.  First, second, and third places (with ties) will be recognized with certificates.

Pentathlon Exam

Students in Latin III and above may take the 100 question, multiple choice Pentathlon examination, which covers Greco-Roman mythology, Roman history, Roman daily life, Latin grammar, and Latin vocabulary.  First, second, and third places (with ties) will be recognized with certificates.  The first place winner of this exam will win the GJCL State Convention Scholarship, which covers the entire registration cost for Convention at Rock Eagle in April of this year.  Examinees should plan to eat lunch during Lunch Block “C.”

V. Creative Arts Contests

Latin Sight Reading

Sight Latin Reading is a competition open to all levels.  Students may register for the competition at any point during Workshop Blocks 1 and 2 (the cut off is 15 minutes from the end of Workshop II).  At the time of registration, the participant will receive a short speech from antiquity and be given ten minutes to prepare the speech (pronunciation, intonation, etc.).  When called, the student will read the speech for the judge(s), who will evaluate the speech on Latin pronunciation, ability to convey meaning of the speech, and the overall reading ability.  Students will be ranked only with other competitors in the same level.  Levels of competition are Latin I, Latin II, and Advanced (3 or higher).  Summa cum laude, magna cum laude, and cum laude will be awarded to the participants.

Impromptu Art
This competition will take place during Workshop Block #1.  Students will be given a variety of materials with which they need to construct an artfully visual representation of a given theme.  Places are awarded based on creativity, cleanliness, application of the theme, and overall impression.

VI. Olympika

Basketball Tournament

A three-on-three basketball tournament will take place in the Old Gym during the entirety of Workshop Block II.  At all times, each team must have at least one girl on the court.  A team may have up to three substitutes and substitutions may only be made at halftime and between games.  There will be three-minute halves; fouls will of course be called, but only resulting in a change in possession (not free throws).   The tournament is single-elimination.

Because of the element of time, this competition is pre-registration only and each school may register one team.  First place, second place, and third place will be awarded.

Participants in the basketball tournament should be aware that this event will prevent participation in the dashes and throws occurring at the same time.

50 and 100 yard Dashes

These events will be split up into four categories: Junior Boys, Junior Girls, Senior Boys, and Senior Girls.  First place, second place, and third place will be awarded.  Participants should arrive at the track promptly at the beginning of Workshop Block II.  Spiked shoes are not permitted.  Participants should plan to run a preliminary heat and a finals heat, competing against other students in their category.  Participants in the dash events will also be able to participate in the Frisbee and softball throws.

Softball and Frisbee Throws

These events will be split up into four categories: Junior Boys, Junior Girls, Senior Boys, and Senior Girls.  First place, second place, and third place will be awarded.  These Olympika events will take place directly after the dash events (so, in the second half of Workshop Block II).  Spiked shoes are not permitted.  Participants will be allowed one practice throw and an official throw for measurement, competing against other students in their category.  Participants in the throw events will also be able to participate in the 50 and 100 yard dashes, which will be held immediately before the throws.

VII. Competitive Certamen

There are three divisions of certamen: Novice for students in first year Latin, Lower for students in second year, and Upper for students in Latin III and higher. No student may register for more than one level. Students may compete in a higher level of competition than their present year of Latin, but no downward movement will be allowed, e.g. first year students may play Lower, but a second year student may not play Novice.

Each chapter may enter as many teams as they would like in each level for the preliminary exam, however only one team per school, per level may advance to the semi-final round. A team may be composed of up to

four members, but chapters may list up to four more alternates on the team roster.  Alternates may be rotated in or out at the beginning of the semi-final and final rounds, but no substitutions will be allowed during a round (the preliminary exam is considered a round for purposes of substitution).

All teams will take a preliminary written exam, consisting of 50 questions. The highest scoring nine teams will compete in an oral semi-final round with teams 1, 8, 9 and 2, 6,7 and 3, 4, 5 playing each other. After the semi-final round, the three top-scorers of the nine semi-finalists in each level will play a final round.

A round of certamen will consist of 20 toss-ups, worth ten points each, with two five point bonus questions for the team answering each toss-up correctly. There are toss-ups and bonuses from each of the eight convention contest areas: Latin vocabulary, literature, Latin grammar, Roman history, Roman daily life, mythology, derivatives, and mottoes. A minimum of 50% of the questions in any round will be from Latin grammar and vocabulary, and the remaining questions will be from the six other categories. The bonuses associated with a toss-up should be from the same category, i.e. a mythology toss-up should be accompanied by two mythology bonuses.

A toss-up question worth ten points will be read by the moderator. The player who is first to press the hand-held button shall have the opportunity to answer that question and must begin his answer immediately after being called upon. If this player "buzzes in" before the question is read in toto, he may not ask for any more information (e.g. spelling) concerning the question. Team members MAY NOT CONFER on toss-ups. Toss-up questions may be read through a maximum of two uninterrupted times. The first answer given by a player will be the accepted answer. An answer containing any incorrect information will be counted as incorrect. If the signaling team member answers incorrectly, then any one player on another team may signal, and when called upon, attempt the answer. If the question answered incorrectly was interrupted by the first signaling team, it may be repeated in full for the other team/teams provided that someone has not already "buzzed in." If no team answers the toss-up correctly, then the moderator will proceed to the next tossup. If the toss-up is answered correctly, then the team shall have the opportunity to answer two bonus questions, worth five points each. Team members may confer on bonuses. A

team shall have no more than 20 seconds to begin to respond to any bonus question. After 15 seconds have elapsed, the timer will announce "five seconds" as a warning. Once "time" is called, no answer will be accepted. An answer in progress may be completed.

If a tie exists at the end of the semi-final round, a play-off round of five toss-ups and bonuses will

be played.

If, in the course of a match, the moderator inadvertently discloses the correct answer to a toss-up question before all teams have been given a fair opportunity to answer, the team or teams which are penalized will be read an additional toss-up question with bonuses at the end of the round only if this question is critical in the outcome of the match.
